Dolenz Needs Rehab as The Monkees Cancel Remainder of 2011 Tour

Yup, you heard it right here folks. I will be covering this story on the next Strange Dave Show. Apparently, The Monkees have cancelled the remainder of their 2011 tour due to "internal issues" but sources close to the band say that Dolenz has relapsed, hard. This is not surprising as Micky has battled alcoholism in the past; just read his book "I'm A Believer." When I saw them at Westbury Music Fair this summer, Davy and Peter told me that Micky was "too sick" to come out and say hi to Danger Dave and I. Fans have written to me that The Monkees have reported him as being "too sick" to come out to other meet and greets at their other shows across the country. Also, during the live show at Westbury, Micky was sweating like a pig, constantly wiping himself with a towel, even though the venue was absolutely freezing. Hell even Danger Dave said something to me about Micky looking like "the drunk who's constantly sweating even though it's cold out."

So here is my synopsis: The Monkees are a dangerous band; not to coin a phrase. Peter Tork has been sober for like 30 years so the bottom line is don't do drugs or drink in front of him because it's simply not cool. In fact, Peter left the 2001 tour because of the band's drinking. However, I must confess that Davy is my type of drinker i.e. one that does not need rehab. He drinks for fun. I mean just listen to his appearance on my show or read up on his outbursts at solo shows. Someone told me that he had a DUI a few years ago and I could be wrong; but Micky is a little different. He's battled some serious issues before in the past and I hate to be the one to report that the ghost of his dear friend, Harry Nilsson, still haunts Micky. I pray for him.

So don't tell me about "unforeseen circumstances" and don't tell me about "irreconcilable differences." What could three guys, 65, 66, and 69 years of age, be fighting about? The 45th anniversary show was already a neatly polished package containing the band's finest material. The band's facebook page for the 45th anniversary tour was simply deleted and being that there is no official word from the band: The Monkees think they are better than us.

I am very upset by these turn of events. What could The Monkees possibly be fighting about?

My sources have told me that The Monkees have cancelled their shows because Dolenz, who's 66 years old, needs to get well. They tell me that he' s not "sick" with the flu; he's "sick" with alcoholism. My sources also inform me that Davy's social drinking after the show is not helping and add Peter's sobriety into the mix - You Got One Dangerous Band

Listening to my family ask the four questions, all of which are, "So when's the meal?"
Adding a fifth question to the original four which asks "Why in this year do I pay so much more for gasoline than any other year?"
Remembering why it's so important to spend Passover with family; so I'm reminded of how important it is to stay away from them during the year.

Fathers Day 2010: My 15 Minutes With Tony Jackson Of The Searchers

When I was 15, my family and I went on a trip to England. Our itinerary included Oxford, London, Bath, and other places. One place noticeably missing from our itinerary was Liverpool - the birthplace of The Beatles.

The year was 1994. I was just starting to hit my rebellious youth. At that time, I was really into playing the guitar, playing the piano, singing, writing my own songs, and listening to anything Beatles.

I asked if we could stop off in Liverpool. Nobody in my family wanted to. My mother and sister were concerned because they heard that Liverpool was "not such a nice place". Nobody was on my side. Except my dad.

"Sure, let's make a stop there".

We went to The Beatles Museum and took The Magical Mystery Tour Bus across Liverpool. I got to see Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane. Our tour guide told us that they no longer put up street signs for Penny Lane because they "always get stolen".

We visited the old childhood homes of Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and John Lennon. Our tour guide, who was also quite drunk at the time, took us to the Cavern where The Beatles used to play.

After the tour was done, we went back to the hotel and that's when the bad news really hit me- this was the end of my adventures in Beatles land. I took out the tour guide book my father got for me and read it for a second time. I had my John Lennon biography with me and started feverishly reviewing it for fear of losing the nostalgic feeling of being so close to The Beatles.

To add to my misery, we were one day late because Beatlesfest, a celebration in Liverpool by not only local cover bands but by some of the actual 60's bands that used to perform live with The Beatles, had ended one day prior to our arrival. Sensing my feelings of despair, my father stepped in.

"I'm taking him out to the Cavern Club."

Whoopee! I was thrilled! My mother wasn't.

"He's 15 and you're going to take him drinking?"

Why do mom's always have to be that way I thought.

"No, of course not, well, maybe one beer. C'mon, he's in Liverpool!"

Way to go Dad I thought.

"Ok, be careful, not too late".

Now this was my chance to really hang out with The Beatles on Matthews Street.

We went to the Cavern Club, saw a local Liverpool band there, and we were told by one of the passerby's to head over to "Lennon's Pub" which was also on Matthews Street.

We walked in and my dad bought me a soda. This was way before college and I wasn't into drinking yet. Then, at the bar, we noticed a familiar face.

"Hey Dad, it's our tour guide!"

We went up to him, said hello, and of course he was still drunk. He was hanging out with a local musician, younger, who had just finished Beatlesfest a day earlier but was still comfortably continuing his drinking binge. Just then, an older gentleman with silver hair came in and summoned our tour guide and younger musical companion to leave the bar.

"Who is that?"

He looked at me and said, "Tony Jackson, The Searchers".

"Woh, you mean Love Potion #9?"

Tony turned to us like he was in a hurry, gave my father and I his business card which read
'Tony Jackson - Original Lead Singer Of The Searchers' and then turned away towards the exit.

"Hey, where you going?"

The tour guide told my father, "We're off to another pub".

My dad quipped, "Oh, that's too bad, drinks are on me".

The tour guide yelled to Tony who was halfway out the door.

"Hey Tony, they're buying."

WOOOOSH! About face, 180 degrees. Tony came right back to the bar and my dad bought the three of them rounds.

Now this was my first taste of "celebrity". The bassist and singer of such hits as "Needles and Pins", "Love Potion #9", and "Sugar & Spice" was drinking and talking....with me! My very first celebrity interview.

My dad told him I was a singer and a songwriter. Tony, at this point quite drunk, asked me, "Do you know where you need to sing from?"

"Uh, yeah, the heart?"

Tony took another sip of whiskey, looked me in the face, took his finger and pointed to head.

"It don't come from here."

He then pointed to his chest.

"It don't come from here neither."

Tony got up on his bar stool, pointed to his crotch and said loudly, "It comes from right here!".

Now, at this point, I was in orbit. My first rock n roll drinking bender. The tour guide came over to me and was drunker than ever.

"Do you know why they call this Lennon's Pub?"

"Because John used to drink here."

"That's right, although, his father used to drink here too"

"Was that before or after he released his own record as Freddie Lennon?"

He turned to me with a slight look of bewilderment.

"Both but never together and John hadn't even spoken to his father since the 1960's".

At this point, I knew he was wrong, or drunk, or both.

"Actually, in 1976, right before Freddie Lennon died, John called him on his death bed".

The tour guide put his drink on the bar, eyes wide opened, gave me a look of absolute astonishment,turned to my father who was listening in on our conversation.

"How the hell did your son know that? Nobody knows about that phone call"

You have to put this scenario in context. I was 15 years old and this was 1994 - years before wikipedia and the Internet. I had read about the phone call in a 1,000 plus page biography about John Lennon's life.

He told my father how amazed they all were with my knowledge of Beatles history - not to mention the fact that I knew who The Searchers were!

When we left Liverpool and got back to the States, I commenced a unilateral correspondence with Tony and the tour guide. They never responded. Years later I learned that Tony passed away after years of hard living and heavy drinking.

So where am I going with this?

This Sunday is father's day and I'm not getting along so well with mine. So, I have decided, regardless of everything, this father's day I will be thinking about the good times - like the time my dad took me to Liverpool and the night we got to spend hanging out with Tony Jackson.

The Venetian Doo Wop Concert 4-23-10 Mystics, Music, and Magic

Friday April 23, 2010 found me in Las Vegas staying at Caesars which is right on the strip. At around 5 p.m. I get a phone call from Joni who manages George Galfo's Mystics.

"What time are you coming to the Venetian? George wants to have a drink with you after the show!"

I answered, "I'm on the strip, should be there in 10 minutes"

The "there" was The Venetian, also on the strip, and it involved a doo wop concert produced by Harvey Robbins starring The Skyliners, The Marcels, Ron McPhatter, and of course George Galfo's Mystics.

The show opened with Harvey Robbins introducing George and The Mystics. Microphone troubles delayed the opening number with George asking the audience, "Can you hear me?"

The Mystics then proceeded to laugh in jest and broke into their number one smash hit "Hushabye" with George Galfo on lead vocals.

How did they sound? Absolutely amazing! Their extremely tight harmonies coupled with George's solid lead vocal performance flowed together like cold vanilla ice cream on a warm baked apple. Simply delicious.

My wife's favorite selection from George's set was from Joe Neary - one of George's Mystics who can be heard on Dion's immortal "Shu Bop" record. He took lead on "Just My Imagination" which had the absolute effect of putting The Temptations and Otis Williams to shame.

Next up were The Marcels. Walt Maddox, the only original member of The Marcels, also a previous guest on The Strange Dave Show, only came out for their last number, "Blue Moon" which was kind of disappointing despite the fact that the other uniform suit wearing non-original "Marcels" put on a great show without Walt. When he suddenly appeared during their last number in a totally different suit, he appeared more dazed and confused than Brian Wilson on a good day. Was he actually singing during "Blue Moon"?

Jimmy Beaumont and The Skyliners headlined the show but it pains me to say that Jimmy did not have a great performance with noticeable difficulties reaching the high notes on their classic "Since I Don't Have You".

Sorry Jimmy, no offense! I still want to interview you for my show!

Harvey Robbins performed with his "doo wop band" which starred legendary R & B guitarist Billy Davis who wrote and played guitar on the original "The Twist".

Harvey in his purple suit, purple shoes, together with flamboyant hair peice and accompanying dance moves gave the audience the proverbial bang for their buck and Billy Davis on guitar was an absolute treat.

The person that stole the show was Ron McPhatter - son of blues legend Ruth Brown and Clyde McPhatter who was an original founding member of The Drifters.

Ron was amazing! He covered his father's tunes with grace, elegance, and a whole lot of soul.

My favorite moment during his performance was when he sang "Money Honey" with George Galfo and The Mystics on background harmony vocals.

Also of great importance was his tribute to The Platters as Ron explained with dance moves the real difference between The Drifters and The Platters.

For those of you that are misinformed, Ron's tribute to The Platters is of equal importance due to his magnificent portrayal of original lead singer Tony Williams in the film "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" starring Halle Berry who Clyde pretty much jokingly referred to during his set as having the hots for him.

After the show finished, my wife and I met, chatted, and took pictures with Harvey, Ron, Billy, George and the rest of the guys. Then the real special moment happened when were invited by Joni to get a drink with George, Anthony, Howard, and Joe at the food court in the casino at The Venetian with Howard still wearing his concert performance blue sequence two piece suit. George et al. had already changed into jeans by this point.

After the show we all sat around having a blast. We talked about Doo Wop, politics, history, and the current state of the music business.

But enough about gossip - who cares about who said what about Walt Maddox's microphone being shut off during The Marcel's live performance or Jimmy Beaumont's lackluster performance or the flamboyantly gay Harvey Robbins?

The real magic moment for me was when George and gang broke out into four part harmony acapella version of "Diamonds and Pearls" right there in the food court! People approached us as they were singing.

"Oh my god, we saw you on television earlier singing that exact same song!"

Amazing harmonies. George has still got it. The Mystics have still got it.

Why they aren't able to do more shows on both coasts is completely beyond me.

If you enjoy a live doo wop concert by a group that has a professional sound then you really are doing yourself a disservice if you don't make it out to see The Mystics perform live.

Things are pretty hectic in The Strange Dave Show Studio this week. First off, my very recently posted youtube video, "The Sarah Silverman Rape Song" has reached nearly 500 views already (to watch, go to www.youtube.com/strangedaveshow) and my show's youtube channel has nearly 30,000 views altogether which is fantastic considering I'm not some guy who goes out filming unkown bands and artists to upload their videos onto youtube in order to gather hits/views (i.e. the unknown bands/artists dying for attention self promoting their stuff to friends and family on their social networking websites).

All of the stuff on The Strange Dave Show Youtube Channel is original - it's all me. That says alot.

Last night I had the wonderful pleasure of interviewing two people. First up was Nils Lofgren who revealed that he played piano on Neil Young's After The Gold Rush album on tunes like "Only Love Can Break Your Heart". He also opened up to me about The E. Street Band, Bruce's current relationship with Patti, and talked about touring with Ringo Starr and His All Star Band.

Second up was Alexis Rigby - a hot 18 year old girl who's a huge Monkees fan and is organizing a protest outside of The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame in order to get The Monkees into the Hall.

My surrogate mother and Comic Strip legend Gladys Simon asked me to do Friday night at The Comic Strip Live but I haven't gotten back to her yet. I must must must call her today. (I wish I had more time in the day).

Nick Ruggia of NICK & NICK, the comedy duo on SDS, wants me to do a live show with him and his comedy troupe and cult legend April Brucker but I haven't gotten back to him about this either.

On top of everything else, I'm going to LAS VEGAS next week as a special guest of GEORGE GALFO AND THE MYSTICS who will be performing live at THE VENETIAN on the strip on April 23, 2010 and there are rumors swirling that they may ask me to open up for them.

I've been getting alot of requests to do stand-up and have been pretty much turning them all down.

I guess the main problem with stand-up comedy is simply this: It's an archaic form of entertainment. When I do the live stand-up stuff, its mostly in front of other comics and/or tourists.

Youtube, comedy central, internet radio....why go out, spend money on admission and a two drink minimum?

That's why stand-up comedy is the "old" way of doing things.

The new way of doing things is being creative with your comedy online where the majority of fans and listeners are.

My youtube page, www.youtube.com/strangedaveshow, has received over 27,000 views since I started putting up episodes this year.

This may seem like a relatively low but remember, all of my material is original i.e. I'm not just recording bands or live artists on my blackberry and uploading it so that others can start promoting (i.e. the bands/artists themselves)

All of my stuff is from me. My interviews, my comedy, my parody songs and I'm pretty damn pleased that I'm getting an average of 500 plus views on youtube daily, not to mention all the people podcasting the show through ITUNES, YAHOO, GOOGLE, and of course http://strangedaveshow.podomatic.com

So my look of the future is this: Stay original and maintain a strong online presence.

Did I mention my Sarah Silverman Rape Song parody already has over 330 views since I posted it four days ago?

Or that my stupid Haitian Parody Song has over 11,000 views....

I will do some stand-up comedy stuff in the future for sure - it's still a lot of fun and I have no desire to "make it" or become rich and famous. (Well....er....maybe the rich part!)

But making it as a stand-up comedian in the post millennium is pretty much on par with the same probability of dying in a plane crash.

Sorry comedians!

My radio program, "The Strange Dave Show" has consistently remained in the top 20 comedy podcasts on podomatic since the beginning of this year.

My youtube page, youtube.com/strangedaveshow, a site that I just started promoting the show on in January of this year, has gathered over 20,000 views as of the date of this blog.

My facebook page has almost 800 fans and I now have been asked to fill in as a "stand by" comic at some of New York City's hottest Comedy Clubs.

Needless to say, I can no longer continue doing everything for the show.

That is why I'm proud to announce my personal assistant Sarah Harrison coming on board!

She is a wonderfully talented and very bright older woman that has volunteered her services.

Sarah is the perfect choice for this job too. First off, she doesn't have a facebook page or myspace page or any page of her own. (i.e. meaning, nobody can bother her!)

Second of all, she's a fan of mine that is willing to work for free! (whoopeee!)

And last but not least, she is much much much kinder than I ever will be and I also see her as my PR woman in this regard.

She has access to all of my websites. Sarah is probably the person you will be talking with (or chatting with) on facebook, gmail, myspace, twitter......

I still will sign on once in a while when I have the time in between my law practice, radio program, and stand up comedy career but have no fear: Sarah has my full confidence. She is very good about sending me everything that is said online and I am very appreciative of that.

My Review of Jay & The Americans

My review of Jay & The Americans March 5, 2010 concert at BB KINGS can be summed up in one word: FUN

The boys, Howie Kane (a.k.a. "The Ladies Man"), Sandy Deanne, Marty Sanders, and Jay number three Jay Reinke put on a great show. With Marty being the only original American playing an instrument (acoustic guitar), they actually had a very tight five piece back up band that included Emil "Peppy" Thielhelm from The Blues Magoos ("We Ain't Got Nothin Yet"). The band effectively re-produced that "American" sound with a little more of a rock 'n' roll/R&B edge that updates the sound for people of all ages to enjoy.

Also of importance are the stories that they tell in between songs Who knew Marty Sanders co-wrote Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation. And seeing the boys cover that song......wow!

Of course, all Jay Black fans know about "Steely Dan's" involvment with the band but watching the boys cover "Reeling In The Years" made the repeat story all the more enjoyable.

Sandy Deanne's introduction to his favorite song,"Walking In The Rain" (no big shocker since it was Deanne that produced the original recording of it and it was the last hit for Jay & The Americans), was very touching as were all the stories told by the boys.

But what struck me most of course were the tight harmonies and Jay Reinke's amazing lead vocals. I hate to say this, but at this point in time, Jay Reinke is a better singer than Jay Black and I know this because I've seen both perform.

The problem with Jay Black's group is just that: There isn't one. There are no "Americans" singing in the background and lets face it: It wasn't Jay Black that made all those hits great - it was Jay AND The Americans.

Another reason why Jay Reinke has a better voice now is also because Jay Black didn't take care of himself and can no longer hit those high notes - he has to rely on one of his sons. (Oy vey, that makes me think of the last Jay Black concert I saw with his fat son taking over the high notes during songs like "Crying" - CRINGE!!!)

Jay Reinke doesn't need offspring: He hits every single high note (yes, even "Cara Mia") with poise, grace, and elegance.

Now of course every review must contain some negativity otherwise it would just be blowing smoke up the wazoo.

Noticably lacking from the performance were the high falsetto notes of original American Kenny Vance (a fantastic singer in his own right with his amazing neon-doo wop group KENNY VANCE AND THE PLANOTONES)

I heard someone in the band trying to cover the falsetto notes during some points but Kenny Vance is a very hard person to replace.

Also, I would have liked to have seen the boys play their instruments along with Marty. Why not? Thats what they were known for: One of the first doo-wop groups that actually could play their own instruments (it's also what made Frankie Valli and The Fours Seasons popular)

All in all, Jay & The Americans put on one hell of a show. They also got me great seats and took me backstage to take pictures with them after the performance.

The Strange Dave Show: Live On Stage?

I haven't blogged in quite some time, so much stuff going on. I will attempt to minmize the best I can:

Terry Sylvester of The Hollies announced on the show that he will be reuniting with Allen Clarke and Graham Nash at the March 15, 2010 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame concert and it actually made some headlines.
Nurit Wilde, the mother of Monkee Mike Nesmith's lovechild, announced on my show that Phyllis Nesmith (Mike's 1st wife) had passed away. My show was the first to break it.
Sandy Deane of Jay & The Americans announced on my show that all three Jay's (Traynor, Black, and Reinke) will reunite with the original Americans on the 2010 PBS DOO WOP SPECIAL. As of the day that I write this blog, my show is the only media source to report this.

Sandy invited me backstage after the show this Friday night for a short interview and to hang out with the guys (OH BOY!!!)

George Galfo's Mystics came on my show and of course we had a great time being that it was his like fourth appearance. I will be interviewing him backstage at their Venetian Las Vegas 2010 concert in April.

Now here's the big news: I'm going live on stage.

I've been offered opportunities to do my comedy live on stage (i.e. standup) but I never got into it - until now.

I decided to take my show live on stage and see if it fits into the standup comedy arena. I personally don't think it will but others disagree. Tonight is my first gig (a comedian friend of mine help set it up).

I decided not to release the information about where I'm performing tonight (i.e. if I bomb I'd like to bomb alone: Ah thank you very much!).

Not going to do parody songs live as of this point but that might change in the future.

People have always told me that I should be doing stand-up but my passion for music made radio the fitting choice because it allows me to combine that with my comedy.

The Strange Dave Show goes live in 2010: New York shows interest in The Strange Dave Show

This is something I've wanted for a long time now - a real honest to allah (eventhough I'm Jewish, I feel close to allah because it's like challah without the ch) New York Radio Station ais interested in carrying
"The Strange Dave Show" on a weekly basis!

Can't get into specifics but the station is based on Long Island - it's within 35 minutes of my apartment so it is something that is possible. I did meet with the station manager on Saturday and discussed the details. I could be on as early as next month!

Don't know why I'm getting a sudden burst of attention. Recently, I got a slew of facebook add requests from people claiming to be steady ITUNES listeners - I never realized that the show was a success on ITUNES.

The figures are in: According to podomatic pro statistical data (a very trusted source for online streaming), over 60,000 people podcasted "The Strange Dave Show" in 2009.

So if you are out there and you are reading this, keep listening, or start listening.

Cornel Gunter's Coasters ONLY ON THE STRANGE DAVE SHOW

Here it is, the short short version: The Coasters are one of the finest doo wop bands of all time history. They went through three major line up changes in the 1950's but the most famous line up featured original lead singer Carl Gardner and original lead tenor Cornel Gunter. They were in the group when songs like "Yakety Yak", "Smokey Joe's Cafe", and "Poison Ivy" were recorded.

Eventually, the band broke up and went there separate ways. Cornell started his group, "Cornell Gunter's Coasters" and eventually hired two back up singers to tour with him: Charlie D. and Edwin Cook.

Cornell was murdered in 1990 (for more on that, listen to my lastest show at strangedaveshow.podomatic.com)

Since then, Charlie D. and Edwin Cook have been touring in two separate groups: Cornell Gunter's Original Coasters and Cornell Gunter's Coasters, respectively.

My last two episodes will explain everything that is going on with Cornell GUnter's Coasters.

This is my first blog so if it's a little choppy I apologize.

OK here it goes: My name is Dave Rosenberg and I produce my own radio show, "The Strange Dave Show". I'm also a lawyer specializing in criminal defense, traffic tickets, liquor licenses, landlord tenant disputes, and so forth.

I've always had a passion for music. About five years ago, I decided that I could no longer be in local bands because my law practice was too time consuming. An empty void was left as I decided to turn to radio.

Fast forward to today: The Strange Dave Show, a comedic oldies rock n roll based radio program, can be heard in over thirteen states on twenty five different radio stations.

Here's the funny part: I have never held a real radio gig. No radio station has ever offered to hire me as an on-air dee jay. I was dejected, rejected, and once ejected from a very prominent radio station.

So, I took my show to the internet and from there it got picked up by so called "real radio stations" that you can tune into on your car stereo. However, I live in New York, base my show out of New York, and have yet to be aired out of New York.

Granted I just did my dream interview: Davy Jones of The Monkees - one of my favorite singers of all time.

Problem: I don't get paid to do the show. I do receive back stage passes, free c.d.'s, mp3's, and tons of cool stuff. However, some $$$ would be nice and not because I need $$$.

I honestly feel that being paid to do The Strange Dave Show for real and not in the form of free gifts, concert tix and c.d.'s is the equivalent of validation for my hard work.

To be paid to interview people like Cornell Gunter's Coasters and Jean Bennett from Buck Ram's Platter's would be a true accomplishment. I just interviewed them "for free". Go to http://strangedaveshow.podomatic.com to listen, you guessed it, "for free".

Now I'm not trying to minimize my success: Go to Cornell Gunter's Coasters facebook site or their website (google it, I'm too into writing this right now to go looking for the link) and you will see that The Strange Dave Show episode that I just did with them is prominently featured.

In fact, they offered me a gig to open up for them and emcee some of their live performances and they did this ON THE AIR.

Davy Jones has a link on his facebook site to the episode he just did with me and his fans praise the show as one of his best interviews in years.

Charles Busch, the actor/writer/director, has me on his blog spot and website as well.

So does Keith of "98.6" fame, so does Johnny J. Blair of The Davy Jones Band, so does April Brucker the infamous comedienne from NYC.

I'm also going to be apart of a documentary and there's a book about radio programs that includes The Strange Dave Show as one of the top 30 entertainment shows to look out for in 2010.

To sum things up: I am very humbled by all the attention.

But some validation would be nice.
